El Sol de México custom font is part of the rebranding of its masthead.
El Sol is a custom typeface designed by Oscar Yáñez based on his redesign of the masthead for the newspaper El Sol de México, which belongs to OEM (Organización Editorial Mexicana), the largest news hub in Latin America. The typeface was commissioned by creative director Oscar Santiago, who redesigned the newspaper and requested a masthead redesign first.
Following this redesign, it was necessary to adjust the mastheads for the 28 newspapers derived from it, newspapers throughout all the nation, all linked to El Sol de México. After exploring different solutions, we declined for a typeface as a best solution, would be more practical because new publications are constantly being added that require a newspaper masthead following ESM's graphic guidelines.
The El Sol typeface includes a Condensed version for particularly long names, as well as a Small Caps version for special editions and publications.
Ultimately, the project evolved into a cohesive typographic tool that ensures consistency, flexibility, and long-term sustainability across an expanding editorial network.
